AT2022HKC IN UGC 03944

Astro Notes: ATLAS22lrz (AT2022hkc): discovery of a candidate SN in UGC
03944 (61 Mpc)Authors:D. R. Young et. al.

Here we report the ATLAS discovery of the transient ATLAS22lrz (AT2022hkc)
in galaxy UGC 03944 at magnitude m_o = 18.43 +/- 0.20. At a distance of 61
Mpc (median redshift-independent distance from NED), the transient was
discovered on MJD = 59680.30 (2022-04-11.30) with an absolute magnitude of M
= -15.62 +/- 0.20. The last non-detection through forced photometry was on
MJD 59677.26. Spectroscopic classification is encouraged.

ATLAS is a quadruple 0.5m telescope system with two units in Hawaii
(Haleakala and Mauna Loa), and one each in Chile (El Sauce) and South Africa
(Sutherland). With the installation of the two southern units,
we are robotically surveying the whole sky with a cadence of 1 day between
-50 and +50 and 2 days in the polar regions, weather permitting. Two filters
are used, cyan and orange (denoted c and o; all mags quoted are in the AB
system). While carrying out the primary mission for Near-Earth Objects, we
search for and publicly report stationary transients to the IAU. Data
processing is carried out at Queen's University which combines automated
source parameter filtering, machine learning image recognition, and spatial
cross-matching with astronomical catalogues.

We report a new transient source, most likely a supernova in the galaxy UGC
03944. We discovered ATLAS22lrz (AT2022hkc) on MJD 59680.30 ==
2022-04-11.30, at m_o = 18.43 +/- 0.20. There was no detection by ATLAS on
MJD 59677.26 == 2022-04-08.26. ATLAS22lrz is offset by 7.7 arcsec south,
16.3 arcsec east from UGC 03944, which is at z = 0.013 or d = 61 Mpc (from
NED), implying an absolute magnitude of M = -15.62 +/- 0.20 (assuming m-M =
33.93 and A_r = 0.14 and A_i = 0.10). Followup observations are encouraged.
