THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No .9 1987 Mar 01 09.21UT. Supernova 1987B in NGC 5850 R.Evans, Hazelbrook, NSW advises us that he has discovered a supernova in NGC 5850 which is located at: RA 15h04m.6 DEC +1 44'(1950). The discovery was made on Feb 24.7UT when it was estimated that the magnitude was about 15 and the offsets 75 arcsec west and 120 arcsec south of the nucleus. The discovery was confirmed on Feb 27.7UT by G.Thompson/McNaught. Rob McNaught advises us that he has measured a precise position from a plate by A.Savaga with the UK Schmidt: RA 15h04m30s.56 DEC +1 41'43".8(1950). This yields offsets as: 71 arcsec west; 145 arcsec south. Tom Cragg reports an approx.visual magnitude estimate of 14.4 on Feb 27.70UT. Editorial Notice A further circular will be issued later today with an update of news re SN 1987A. The Editor will be away on business for the evenings of Mar 2,3,4,5 during which MAG60138 will continue to be monitored by Mark Hurst but urgent discovery messages should be telephoned to Peter Birtwhistle on (0883)842415.
