THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 12 1987 Mar 14 14.45UT. Object near Moon, 1987 Mar 8= Q1987/9 Harold Hill, nr. Wigan, Lancs has reported that he saw a negative magnitude object near the moon on Mar 8. The first quarter moon was 65 deg alt. in a clear sky and the object was first seen at 18.04UT, about 5 degrees north preceding from his location of: Lat 53 32'23".4N Long 2 43'5".8W. In a 21cm S-C x245 the magnified image showed a bright central object with irregular-shaped 'sails' on either side. The motion of the object was irregular necessitating constant recovery using the finder. The 'sails' appeared to constantly change in shape. It was finally lost at 18.16UT when it was 40deg alt. and approx. 150deg azimuth. Did any observer see this object and can anyone offer an explanation for such a baffling observation but by a most experienced observer?
