SUPERNOVA 1979G IN MCG +01-08-023
A.R.Klemola, Lick Observatory, reports that S.Francic has
discovered a stellar object, presumably a supernova, on
simultaneous blue and yellow exposures by B.Jones with the 0.5-m
double astrograph on 1979 Dec 17.23UT. The object, of B about 16.5
was located:
RA 02h55m48.63s DEC -05 01'08.0" (1950)
9.4"E and 4.4"S of the nucleus. IAUC 4591

SUPERNOVA 1988M IN NGC 4496B
A.V.Filippenko, University of California at Berkeley et al report
the discovery of a probable type II supernova long past maximum
brightness in NGC 4496B which is located:
RA 12h 29.1m DEC +04 12.1', (1950)
The object was recorded in a long-slit spectrum of Apr 7 (pa 180
degrees, range 620-686 nm, resolution 0.2-0.3 nm).
Weak, broad H-alpha emission was detected 12.5" south of the
nucleus. Comparison with SN 1980K suggests that SN1988M is probably
300-400d past maximum.
Could observers please check their files/photographs obtained over
the last 2 years for evidence of this object.

The comet (m1=11) is now at declination -40 degrees and moving
south but an ephemeris can be e-mailed on request.
