The object was found on twin photographs taken on 1989 Jan 10.92UT with a 135mmFL lens and on Kodak 2415 when the star was estimated at magnitude 9.3. Collins estimated the position as: RA 03h15.9m DEC +70 37'(1950) Subsequently it was identified on earlier exposures showing clear evidence of variation: 1988 Nov 2.96 [11 and not visible Nov 16.90 approx mag 11 Dec 4.91 10.3 19.96 9.3 28.93 9.3 1989 Jan 10.92 9.3 Although there is no candidate in the GCVS, the Editor notes that the star NSV 01098 has a similar position. According to O.Morgenroth (AN 258, 265-266, 1936) it = BD +70 0236 but the catalogued suspected range is quoted as 13.5-(15.5p, spectral class M4. Analysis of various atlases shows: 1954 Oct 30, approx mag B=14. (Lick) 1969 Aug 11, [14.5B and not recorded.(Atlas Stellarum) 1977 Sept 11, approx 9.5pv (Papadopoulos) Could photographic patrollers check earlier films for images and e-mail their results, Guy M Hurst
