Telephone: (0256)471074 Int:+44256471074 Telex: 94082518 Answerback: TAGUY ------------------------------------------------------------------ POSSIBLE VAR IN NGC 3587 (=Q1990/7) Frank Miablint, Nuremberg, West Germany, reports an observation of a magnitude 12 star near the edge of the Owl Nebula (=NGC 3587 RA 11h11m53s DEC +55 17,1950) where normally only a magnitude 17 object is recorded on photographs. The star, seen on 1990 Jan 26 and 27, appears to coincide with a mag 17 object shown on Burnhams page 1999 and located 87mm from the bottom edge and 64mm from the right. He estimated it equal to another star 60mm from bottom and 51mm from right on the above dates, using a 0.26-m refl and UHE Lumicon Filter. The suspect does not appear to be a known variable and is about 70"N of the central star (the latter, of mag 14, was not seen during the observation). Photographs would be welcomed. Guy M Hurst
