         *It is with the greatest sadness that I must*
         *tell you that I have received a telephone  *
         *call from Peggy Young reporting that Alan  *
         *collapsed and died whilst out in the garden*
         *near their home at Burwash on Tuesday of   *
         *this week. This is a terrible blow to Peggy*
         *and a major loss to British Astronomy. He  *
         *will be missed by the many who knew him.   *
         *A full obituary will appear in TA shortly. *
