On 1990 June 7.05UT it was estimated at 13.0v in good conditions. TA records show a maximum of 12.8 was reported for 1989 Oct 1. POSSIBLE FADE OF SAOC 142203 (Q1990/51) George Alcock, Yaxley, Peterborough, reports that SAOC 142203 located at: RA 18h15m25s DEC -08 39'14"(1950) was noted near magnitude 9 during a nova patrol on 1990 June 4 at 22.40UT using 15x80B. The star is plotted at mag 7 on various atlases and the SAOC has 7.2, spectral class KO. The star is also HD 168014 and BD -8 4583. In the CSI the V magnitude is given as 7.7. The star is not catalogued as a variable in the GCVS, NSV or Name Lists 67-69. In response to this alert, G.Hurst observed the star in poor conditions on 1990 June 4 at 23.25UT and estimated it at about 8.3 (15x80B) but the uncertainty was +/-0.5. Apart from inferior conditions and low altitude, use of comparisons on AAVSO Atlas for R Sct and S Sct showed inconsistencies between the two sequences. Mike Collins advises that the star is not a known spectroscopic binary. N.James reports that the star was recorded at about 8.0 on a patrol photo of 1990 May 23 but earlier negatives do not show any significant change. Estimates on the evening of June 6/7 by N.James and M.Mobberley place it 7.7-8.0 with moonlight a problem. Further estimates or earlier photographic analysis are urgently needed. Guy M Hurst
