ASTEROID (4506)
It was officially announced today that 1990 FJ, discovered by Brian
G.W.Manning, of Stakenbridge, England on 1990 Mar 24 has been
numbered as (4506). This is the first asteroid to be discovered from
Britain in over 80 years which has subsequently been numbered. It
was linked with earlier observations under the following
designations:
1980 DM2; 1983 WE; 1987 RV2; 1987 SF16.
(MPC 16 420).
By coincidence, an asteroid found on 1909 Oct 5 by P.H.Cowell at
Greenwich (A909 TF) was recently numbered (4358) following
successful photography in 1989.
(MPC 15 862)
Brian has already had asteroid (3698) Manning named after him in
recognition of his fine achievements in the field of astrometry.
We extend our congratulations to Brian on this piece of history.
