THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 782 1993 Oct 19 20.48UT Ed:Guy M Hurst, 16,Westminster Close, Kempshott Rise, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP,England. Telephone/FAX(0256)471074 Int:+44256471074 TELEX: 9312111261 Answerback: TA G TELECOM GOLD: 10074:MIK2885 GMH at UK.AC.RUTHERFORD.STARLINK.ASTROPHYSICS STARLINK: RLSAC::GMH GMH at UK.AC.CAM.ASTRONOMY.STARLINK STARLINK: CAVAD::GMH ------------------------------------------------------------------- TAV 1836+11 Nick James, Chelmsford reports that a photograph taken on 1993 October 7.77UT showed the star near magnitude 12.4 [estimate was F(1)v(3)H], Kodak 2415 film. This appears significantly brighter than recent estimates published on E781. Subsequently Martin Mobberley. Bury St Edmunds, sent news of a photograph secured on 1993 October 9.802UT with the 0.36-m f/5 reflector using T-Max 400 film. His magnitude estimate was V=star K = 13.9, similar to the recent visual estimates. The apparent discrepancy between the above two reports may be accounted for by a red star whose brightness is 'enhanced' on the red-sensitive Kodak 2415 film but not in the case of T-Max. Raymond Minty, Banff, Scotland writes that he has located a slide of 1992 Nov 23.78UT which shows the variable as a red object of about magnitude 11.9. The 15 minute exposure on Fujichrome 1600 film was taken with a 300mm telephoto lens at f4.5. Further visual estimates (cf E781): 1993 Oct 7.779UT, 14.1v. (G.Poyner, estimate K-2) 0.40-m reflector; Oct 9.779UT, 14.2v (G.Poyner, estimate K-3); Oct 9.823UT, 14.4v (W.Worraker, estimate L+2;K-4) EDITORIAL ABSENCE The Editor will be away on holiday and not contactable from Sunday evening October 24 returning Saturday October 30. During that time Martin Mobberley, Assistant Editor will continue this circular service and any discoveries should be referred to him. Variable star alerts should also be directed to Gary Poyner in the usual way. All e-mail messages should continue to be sent to the Editor's mailboxes.
