To mark this occasion we reproduce the very first circular issued on 1987 Jan 24 below. It was sent to just two people, David Moore in Ireland (who still subscribes) and a carbon copy to the editor. The message was sent via the e-mail service then operated by Telecom Gold. A simultaneous message was sent in the old paper form on Early Warning Circular 88. The circulation over that time has risen from 2 to 76 despite the scepticism of many who then said e-mail would never become a suitable medium for the majority to exchange notes on astronomy! Hopefully the launch of this service eight years ago might have been a bold step in 1987 but its present day success has justified the decision. =================================================================== THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 1 1987 Jan 24 15.47UT.
