Tonny Vanmunster provided confirmation on the same date quoting an approximate magnitude of 16.5. Nick James has subsequently e-mailed an image of the field obtained on Sept 12 at 22h23m48sUT. This does not show a definite image when compared with the chart/plate in RIC.ASTR.8 No 10 (1971) by W.J.Miller where the star is also designated as VV279. It is noted however that the TA sequence at the faint end is based on photographic magnitudes only (chart 901029). The chart identification appears to agree to Miller and also to Downes and Shara. It is therefore unclear whether a faint maximum took place but it is always possible the variable was showing some rapid fluctuations during the same evening that the three observers mentioned were monitoring the object. We would encourage other observers to monitor this object and report results to us. Guy M Hurst
