Mueller reports her discovery of an apparent supernova (mag about 17.5) on a plate taken on Jan. 19 with the 1.2-m Oschin Schmidt telescope in the course of the second Palomar Sky Survey. Mueller reports the following approximate position for the supernova: R.A. = 11h55m48s.8, Decl. = +80o12'44" (2000.0); this is 9" east and 29" south of the southern bright component of this three-galaxy complex. S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the following precise position for SN 1997T, measured by Y. Kushida from an unfiltered CCD frame taken on Jan. 22.619 UT by R. Kushida (Yatsugatake South Base Observatory, 0.40-m reflector): R.A. = 11h55m47s.46, Decl. = +80o12'42".6 (equinox 2000.0), mag 17.6; this corresponds to 9".5 east and 27".3 south of the brightest galaxy component. IAUC 6543 (extract) SUPERNOVAE 1997U AND 1997V IN ANONYMOUS GALAXIES B. Schmidt reports the discovery by the Mount Stromlo Abell Cluster Supernova Search Team of two apparent supernovae near Abell 423 on CCD images taken by S. Sabine with the Mount Stromlo 1.27-m telescope (+ Macho Camera). SN 1997U is located at R.A. = 3h10m46s.25, Decl. = -12 16'04".5 (equinox 2000.0), which is 0".01 east and 0".45 north of the nucleus of the host galaxy. SN 1997U is visible at mR about 21.5 on V and R CCD images taken on Jan. 2, and it was also detected on similar frames taken on Jan. 5 and 8. SN 1997V is located at R.A. = 3h11m43s.82, Decl. = -12 02'11".0 (equinox 2000.0), which is 6".0 east and 0".1 north of the nucleus of the host galaxy. SN 1997V is visible at mR about 21.0 on V and R CCD images taken on Jan. 8, and is also present, but 0.5 mag fainter, on similar frames taken on Jan. 5. Guy M Hurst
