SN 1998E is located 3" east and 8" south of the centre of NGC 5161 (galaxy centre at R.A. = 13h29m14s.1, Decl. = -33o10'30", equinox 2000.0). The last previous image of the field was taken on Jan. 9, with no object visible at this position to mag about 19. IAUC 6817 (extract) NSV 1665 John Mackey, Peterborough, England reports a precise position for the variable 'recovered' by Mike Collins and announced on E1261: 1997 Dec 31.78081UT RA 04h37m32.85s DEC +51 45'19.8"(2000) 0.28-m Schmidt-Cassegrain and Starlight Xpress CCD with V filter. Station code 963 This position has now been incorporated into the e-mail and paper charts under the latest revision of 980107. The position is based on the suspected variable being identical to GSC 3354.0049 as proposed by Mike Collins. However Gary Poyner notes that the NSV catalogue has the star listed with an amplitude of 14-14.5p rather than 11.6-12.2? mentioned on our previous circular. This may be due to the colour index of the star quoted as spectral class M4 but we cannot totally rule out the possibility the companion is the variable. Further reports on the variation and identification would be welcomed. Guy M Hurst
