Li, M. Modjaz, R. R. Treffers, and A. V. Filippenko, University of California at Berkeley, report their discovery of an apparent supernova during the course of the Lick Observatory Supernova Search with the 0.8-m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope. SN 1998W was found and confirmed on unfiltered CCD images obtained on Mar. 16.3 (mag about 17.3) and 17.2 UT (mag about 17.4), and it is located at R.A. = 9h58m54s.83, Decl. = +14o25'25".7 (2000), which is about 20" west and 12" north of the nucleus of NGC 3075. An image of the same field taken on Jan. 25 (limiting mag about 18.5) shows no star at this position. IAUC 6843 SUPERNOVA 1998V IN NGC 6627 The supernova found by Mark Armstrong and reported on E1281 has been confirmed spectroscopically as shown in the IAUC extract below: S. Jha, P. Garnavich, and R. Kirshner, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, report that a spectrum obtained at the 1.5-m Tillinghast telescope at Mount Hopkins on Mar. 19.5 UT by D.Koranyi and M. Calkins show that SN 1998V (cf. IAUC 6841) is a type-Ia supernova at maximum. The strong Si II absorption shows a photospheric expansion velocity of -10 800 km/s. Narrow emission lines from the host galaxy give a redshift of 5280 km/s. IAUC 6844 ECLIPSE VIDEO Curacao Eclipse Experience Video Whilst Martin Mobberley was in Curacao he kindly made a video for TA lasting about one hour which includes excellent views of the eclipse and numerous interviews before and after the eclipse with well known astronomers and other personalities! The cost is L10.00 for UK destinations including postage. All remittances should be made payable to 'The Astronomer'. European destinations: Add 30% to cover post/packing costs. Airmail outside Europe please write/e-mail for quotation. Following receipt of an invitation, the Editor will be attending to represent TA which is particularly appropriate given that George was one of our earliest supporters. The editor will be away from home this Monday night but urgent calls can be directed to Martin Mobberley. Guy M Hurst
