TAV J0218+507 (=Q1998/073)
Mike Collins, Everton, Beds, England reported a probable variable
on 1998 Oct 12 (logged as Q1998/073) which was located at:
RA 02h18m21s DEC +50 46' 03"(2000)
The object was detected on photographs for the UK Nova/Supernova
Patrol. On 1988 Sept 20 Mike estimated it at magnitude 10.5 but
11.4 on a shot of 1989 Dec 26.0UT. The star was not in the Guide
Star Catalogue. At the request of the editor, Tom Boles imaged it
CCD (unfiltered) on 1998 Oct 14 and Dec 27. Analysis by Tom showed
the star fading from 9.8 to 10.5. The Dec 27 exposure received over
the Internet by the editor clearly showed the object to be the
SE component of a double. The editor identified the suspect on the
Palomar Sky Survey of 1953 Nov 20 (Red plate) and reduced the
magnitude as 13.8. A patrol photograph by Tony Poole of 1978 Feb 2
(20h43mUT) showed it at magnitude 12.3 on Kodak 2475 film.
