------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 1429 1999 Jly 27 21.06UT Ed:Guy M Hurst, 16,Westminster Close, Kempshott Rise, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP,England.Telephone/FAX(01256)471074Int:+441256471074 INTERNET: GUY@TAHQ.DEMON.CO.UK GMH at AST.STAR.RL.AC.UK WORLD WIDE WEB http://www.demon.co.uk/astronomer ------------------------------------------------------------------- V635 CAS (=Q1999/270) Gary Poyner, Birmingham, reports that V635 Cas (4U 0115+634) is bright. His recent visual observations follow: Jly 5.057 UT mv=15.3 8.069 15.3 11.048 15.4 12.042 15.3 13.065 15.4 17.076 15.3 18.065 15.4 23.074 15.2 24.051 14.6 24.086 14.5 The last occasion that V635 Cas was seen this bright visually was 1998 October, but that was a short duration flare (3d). A similar magnitude was reached during the prolonged outburst of 1995-1996, when its magnitude remained above 15.0 for just over 5 months. HT CAS (=Q1999/271) E.Muyllaert, Ostend, Belgium reports an outburst of the UG star, HT Cas which was observed on 1999 July 26.941UT at magnitude 12.9 visual (0.21-m T). A later report of an apparently independent detection by Patrick Schmeer in Germany: 1999 July 25.931 UT, [13.3 ; 26.087, [13.6 ; 26.925, 12.5:; 27.090, 12.7 ; 27.093 UT, 12.3 Patrick adds: Part of eclipse egress observed. Some haze + clouds + full moon The most recent superoutburst of HT Cas occurred in 1985 January, when the star peaked at mv= 10.8 (cf. IAUC 4027). This magnitude estimate, however, may be too bright by about one magnitude if it is based on the old AAVSO sequence. High-speed photometry during the current outburst is urgently required. Guy M Hurst
