Although Saturday August 14 was stated as the deadline, I can accept eclipse (only) reports/photos until midnight today (Aug 16.0UT). Any further material should still be sent but will be included in the September issue. NOVA IN M31 R. Johnson, M. Modjaz and W. D. Li, University of California at Berkeley, on behalf of the Lick Observatory Supernova Search, report the discovery with the 0.8-m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT) of an apparent nova in M31 (NGC 224). The nova was discovered and confirmed on unfiltered images taken on Aug. 10.4 UT (mag about 15.6) and Aug. 11.4 UT (mag about 16.8). The new object is located at: R.A. = 00h42m22s.1, Decl. = +41o13'23'' (2000). A KAIT image of the same field on Aug. 9.4 UT (limiting mag about 19.0) showed nothing at the position of the nova. IAUC 7236 (extract) R CORONAE BOREALIS Immediate detailed observations of a possible fade were withheld to avoid bias. As the fading is now substantial, selected estimates follow: 1999 July 5.96UT, 6.2 (Jonathan Shanklin, Cambridge); 17.96, 6.4 (Shanklin); Aug 3.91, 6.6 (Guy Hurst, Basingstoke); 10.98, 7.7 (Shanklin); 10.98, 7.3 (Gary Poyner, Birmingham); 14.95, 8.1 (Hurst). EDITORIAL On behalf of myself and our readers, I would like to thank David Hurst for monitoring the editor's mailbox during my eclipse trip and for dealing with the issue of these e-circulars.
