------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 1469 1999 Nov 21 10.47UT Ed:Guy M Hurst, 16,Westminster Close, Kempshott Rise, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP,England.Telephone/FAX(01256)471074Int:+441256471074 INTERNET: GUY@TAHQ.DEMON.CO.UK GMH at AST.STAR.RL.AC.UK WORLD WIDE WEB http://www.demon.co.uk/astronomer ------------------------------------------------------------------- V452 CAS (=Q1999/296) On 1999 Oct 8, I received a message from Patrick Schmeer that he had detected a brightening of this recurrent object on an image of Oct 8.304UT which he estimated to be magnitude 16.2 using USNO-A2.0. The observer who obtained the image was not named but we now understand is based in USA. Richter had reported detection on Sonneberg plates 1967 Nov 3-8. (MVS 5, Heft 4, 69-72, 1969). Subsequent messages were received here indicating that there had been a number of mis-identifications of this star and no independent confirmation of the October 8 suspected outburst was received. Further negative observations were then reported. A further e-mail, via VSNET, was received on Nov 9 from Patrick Schmeer suggesting that the variable had brightened from 17.5 on 1999 Oct 30.26UT to 15.7 on Nov 9.211UT again, presumably, imaged by the un-named observer in USA. An image was obtained by Martin Mobberley on Nov.9.88UT and e-mailed to the editor given concern over the identification. In a message of Nov 11, Martin asked that I ignore this image as another was being sent with a corrected ID but this image was not received with the message and in the meantime Martin departed for Egypt to observe the Leonids! Finally on Nov 12/13 a second image arrived showing the suspect labelled as the northern component of a pair. This identification agrees with that on page 408 of Downes and Shara (PASP 109, No 734, 1997 April). It is clear that the original identification in Downes and Shara on page 179 (PASP 106 No 684 1993 Feb) was incorrect, labelling the other component and it is not now clear whether any of the intervening faint estimates reported on the Internet are correct. Chris Jones, Laindon, England, has reported observations of the November outburst which presumably relate to the northern component: 1999 Nov 6.8278UT, [15.8; 9.7736, 14.7; 9.8444, 14.9; 16.8875, 15.3; 17.8736, 15.4. (0.45-m reflector). We hope in due course to prepare an updated TA chart so that any future confusion of the identification of this star can be avoided. Guy M Hurst
