The object, initially recorded on August 29.13786UT, was quite faint at magnitude 18.1 on a 60 second integration with the 0.35-m Schmidt-Cassegrain and unfiltered CCD. Mark initially had some difficulty re-imaging it the next night although he subsequently did so as also did Tom Boles. Mark Armstrong sent an appeal to Peter Meikle who arranged for Don Pollacco to also obtain an image at the JKT. The suspect was successfully imaged by this group on Sept 2.2. Initially the Central Bureau waited for a spectrum but various follow-up images since obtained have enabled the following announcement to be made: Guy M. Hurst, Basingstoke, England, reports the discovery by Mark Armstrong (Rolvenden, England) of an apparent supernova (mag 17.8) on an unfiltered CCD image (limiting mag 19) taken on Aug. 29.138 UT in the course of the U.K. Nova/Supernova Patrol with a 0.36-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The discovery image yields the following position for the new object: R.A. = 7h31m05s.91, Decl. = +59o28'38".8 (2000), which is 7" west and 13" south of the centre of UGC 3885. A CCD image taken by Armstrong on 2000 Dec. 21 shows no object at this location to limiting mag 19.5. An image taken by Tom Boles (Coddenham, England) on Sept. 1.05 seems to show the new object, from which Armstrong provides the following position end figures: 05s.95, 38".7. P. Meikle, Astrophysics Group, Imperial College of Science, London, reports that two 600-s I-band images (limiting mag 21.1) obtained by Don Pollacco with the 1.0-m Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope at La Palma on Sept. 2.2 UT show SN 2001eg as a point source at mag 19.2 +/- 0.3 and located 6".8 west and 16".0 south of the galaxy nucleus; Armstrong has measured the position from these images and provides the following position end figures: 05s.99, 38".3. Armstrong adds that an image that he obtained on Sept. 5.14 shows the new object at mag 18.7. IAUC 7712 Guy M Hurst
