The initial image was obtained at 02.51UT on September 9 and, despite being trailed, clearly showed the object but on a single exposure only. Mark obtained a follow-up image of Sept 10.04UT both indicating the object was near magnitude 16.5. An appeal was issued to 'The Astronomer' checking group on Sept 10. In response, Nick James obtained an image with the 0.30-m reflector and unfiltered CCD on Sept 10.90874UT which clearly showed the suspect. Nick obtained a precise position of: RA 01h 38m 12.06s DEC +41 39' 19.7" (2000) mag 17.0. Martin Mobberley also obtained an image (240 second exposure) on Sept 10.905UT showing the object at a similar magnitude. The following IAUC announcement was made before the confirmatory image details above could be included: Guy M. Hurst also reports the discovery by Mark Armstrong of an apparent supernova (mag 16.5) on an unfiltered CCD image (limiting mag 18.5, affected by slight trailing) taken on Sept. 9.119 UT as above with a 0.30-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope; the new object appeared at the same brightness on another image secured on Sept.10.050. The following position for SN 2001eh is the average of measures by Armstrong from his two images: R.A. = 1h38m12s.10, Decl. = +41o39'18".8 (2000), which is 36" west and 6" north of the centre of UGC 1162. Nothing appears at this position on an image taken by Armstrong on 2000 Sept. 25 (limiting mag 19.5), and nothing is anything visible on Palomar Sky survey images taken on 1991 Jan. 19 (blue, limiting mag 22.5), 1995 May 19 (infrared), and 1998 Nov. 25 (red, limiting mag 20.8). IAUC 7712 Special congratulations are due to Mark as the supernova 2001eg (cf TA E-Circular 1688) and this latest discovery were announced on the same IAUC 7712! : editor Guy M Hurst
