Nick James has kindly agreed to provide cover for these circulars and possible discovery queries during this period. He can be contacted on: ndj@blueyonder.co.uk or: telephone (01245) 354366 We also apologise for some missing data on supernovae due to non- receipt of IAUCs which we will resolve shortly. SUPERNOVA 2002bz IN MCG +05-34-33 Tim Puckett and S. Gauthier, USA have reported on IAUC 7866 that they have detected a magnitude 16.9 apparent supernova in MCG +05-34-33 on images of Apr 3.39UT with a 0.35-m telescope. The position is: RA 14h 24m 40.52s DEC +26 37' 34.7" (2000) The offsets are 0.1"W and 3.7"N of the nucleus of this galaxy. MARKARIAN 421 Further to the report on TA E=Circular 1760, Gary Poyner has relayed further estimates, this time by Mike Gainsford which clearly show considerable activity in this object: Mar 13 21h 15m D(2)v(1)E 13.3 21 20h 19m V=D 12.7 29 20h 40m B(1)v(1)C 11.9 Apr 03 20h 58m C(2)v(1)D 12.5 04 20h 45m V=D 12.7: 05 21h 38m C(4)v(1)D 12.6 Mark Kidger, Tenerife, comments that frequent monitoring of this object is needed. SUPERNOVA 2002ca IN UGC 8521 A magnitude 17.3 apparent supernova has been detected in UGC 8521 by Puckett and Kerns (USA) on Apr. 3.29UT and by the KAIT team on Apr 3.3. The position quoted on IAUC 7866 is: RA 13h 32m 31.51s DEC +01 50' 42.5" (2000) Guy M Hurst
