SN 2002hg was first detected at mag 17.0 on a 60s unfiltered CCD image taken on 2002 October 28.219 (limiting mag 18.5). The image was obtained using a 0.35-m Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector in the course of the U.K. Nova/Supernova patrol. The new object is located at R.A. = 10h 37m 10s.6, Dec. = +12d 39' 13".2, which is approximately 3".8 north and 6".3 east of the centre of NGC 3306. Michael Schwartz obtained a confirmation image using the 0.82m Tenagra telescope on Oct 30.540. The new object is not present on Boles' images from 2002 Jan 16 (limiting mag 18.5), 2002 Apr 11, or 2002 Mar 2. It is not present on Palomar Sky Survey red (1993.223) and blue (1994.124) second generation plates nor is it present on the Quick V northern plate 1985.050. SN 2002hg is in Leo and so it is currently a morning object. From the UK it reaches about 40 degrees altitude at the start of twilight.
