------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 1827 2002 Nov 13 12.44UT Ed:Guy M Hurst, 16,Westminster Close, Kempshott Rise, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP,England.Telephone/FAX(01256)471074Int:+441256471074 INTERNET: GUY@TAHQ.DEMON.CO.UK GMH at AST.STAR.RL.AC.UK WORLD WIDE WEB http://www.theastronomer.org ------------------------------------------------------------------- SUPERNOVA 2002hu IN MCG +06-6-12 Tom Boles e-mailed the editor on Nov 7 to advise that a single image of MCG +06-6-012 obtained on Nov 7.092UT during the course of the UK Nova/Supernova Patrol, showed a possible supernova 20.6"E and 6.6"N from the nucleus at magnitude 17.0. The measured position is: RA 02h 18m 20.06s DEC +37 27' 58.8" (2000). The discovery frame was taken with 0.35-m telescope as an unfiltered CCD image. Tom noted it was absent from his image of 2002 Oct 4 (limiting magnitude 18.5) and an earlier image of Sept 8. Equally it was not found on Palomar Sky Survey red and blue plates. A confirmatory image was later obtained on Nov 7.815UT and the object announced on IAUC 8012 as SN 2002hu. T. Matheson, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, reports that a spectrum of Nov 8.80UT by L. Macri with the Mount Hopkins 1.5-m telescope shows that it is of type-Ia before maximum light. EDITORIAL ABSENCE The editor will be away on a research trip from early on Thursday November 14 and will not return until late Sunday November 17. During that time Denis Buczynski, assistant editor, has kindly agreed to issue e-circulars on urgent matters. Possible discoveries should also be directed to him by telephoning (01524)68530 or by sending an e-mail to: denis@cb978iau.demon.co.uk. As always please also send a copy e-mail to the editor's mailbox for review upon my return. Routine, non-urgent e-mails will be dealt with next week but due to likely backlogs may take some time before a reply can be sent. SUPERNOVAE 2002hp, 2002hq, 2002hr, 2002hs, 2002ht A.Riess, Space Telescope Institute has reported on IAUC 8012 that five supernovae, designated as above, have been found by the Hubble Higher-z Supernova team. All ere found on images of Nov 1-2 and were magnitude 23.5 or fainter. SUPERNOVA 2002hv IN UGC 4974 The LOTOSS team have reported on IAUC 8012 that they have recorded a possible supernova with the 0.8-m Tenagra II automated telescope. The object, of magnitude 18.6, is 7.1"E and 43.2"S of the nucleus of UGC 4974 and located at: RA 09h 22m 10.91s DEC +33 50' 10.8" (2000). A confirming image was obtained on 2002 Nov 7.5UT. SUPERNOVA 2002hw IN UGC 52 The LOTOSS team also report a suspected supernova in UGC 52 according to IAUC 8014. The image of 2002 Nov 9.2UT with the 0.8-m Tenagra II telescope shows a magnitude 16.8 object at: RA 00h 06m 49.06s DEC +08 37' 48.5" (2000), 6.7"W and 6.0"N of the galaxy's nucleus. SUPERNOVA 2002ho NGC 4210 This object found by Tom Boles and reported on TA E-Circular 1826, has been confirmed to be a supernova by reference to a spectrum obtained on Nov 9 using the Keck II 10-m telescope. A report on IAUC 8014 mentions, however, that classification as to type remains uncertain at this time although it most closely resembles type-II. Guy M Hurst
