------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 1875 2003 Apr 11 14.56UT Ed:Guy M Hurst, 16,Westminster Close, Kempshott Rise, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP,England.Telephone/FAX(01256)471074Int:+441256471074 INTERNET: GUY@TAHQ.DEMON.CO.UK GMH at AST.STAR.RL.AC.UK WORLD WIDE WEB http://www.theastronomer.org ------------------------------------------------------------------- GRB 030329 = SUPERNOVA 2003dh Tom Matheson (CfA) and others have reported further details of this object (cf TA E-Circular 1868, 1869) on GCN 2107. They obtained spectra of the afterglow of GRB 030329 with the 6.5-m MMT and Blue- Channel spectrograph each night from March 30.12 to April 6.15 (UT). The spectra cover a wavelength range of 350 nm to 850 nm with a resolution of 0.6 nm (FWHM). The early spectra consist of a power-law continuum with narrow emission lines originating from HII regions in the host galaxy. However, a spectrum taken Apr. 6.15 (UT) shows a broad peak in flux at approximately 570nm and another weak deviation from a power-law near 470nm that were not evident in the earlier spectra. The April 6 spectrum is well reproduced by adding a spectrum of SN 1998bw seven days before maximum light to a power-law distribution. They conclude that a supernova spectrum is emerging from the afterglow light. The brightness of the supernova is approximately V=22 based on the strengths of the broad features relative to a pure power-law. Further spectroscopy is planned. Since the issue of the two earlier TA E-Circulars, reports have been received from Arto Oksanen, Nick James, Martin Mobberley, David Strange, Peter Birtwhistle, Gordon Rogers, Tom Boles, John Fletcher and Azz for which we are very grateful. We have awaited a photometric sequence for the field, which is now available courtesy of Arne Henden (USA), so a preliminary reduction of magnitudes can be undertaken. If anyone has images they have not sent through please e-mail them and similarly if you do not appear in the above list (probably because of the lengthy telephone outage here and lost e-mails) please send through your reports. At this stage 'jpegs' or similar will suffice but if a more detailed analysis is needed at professional level we will contact you for FITS files. Finally the designation 2003dh has been assigned to the supernova emerging from the afterglow of GRB 030329, according to IAUC 8114. Guy M Hurst
