------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 1897 2003 Jly 16 15.06UT Ed:Guy M Hurst, 16,Westminster Close, Kempshott Rise, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP,England.Telephone/FAX(01256)471074Int:+441256471074 INTERNET: GUY@TAHQ.DEMON.CO.UK GMH at AST.STAR.RL.AC.UK WORLD WIDE WEB http://www.theastronomer.org ------------------------------------------------------------------- NOVA IN THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD Bill Liller, Chile, e-mailed on June 20: "On five exposures ranging from 45 to 75 seconds (20-cm Schmidt, TP film, no filter) taken between June 17.9739UT and 17.9829UT, I found a new stellar object in the LMC at magnitude 11.0. The candidate nova is at: RA 5h 08.4m Dec -68d 26.2' (2000). No star brighter than magnitude 14 was seen on the most recent exposures taken at June 2.970UT." Subsequently Berto Monard in South Africa, obtained an unfiltered CCD image on June 20.167UT from which the position was measured as: RA 05h 08m 25.59s DEC -68 26' 22.3" (2000) Andrew Pearce, Australia, also e-mailed a visual magnitude estimate of 12.3 obtained on 2003 June 20.958UT. A spectrum was, according to IAUC 8160, obtained by S. Gonzalez on June 30 confirming the object as a nova. SUPERNOVA 2003gi IN IC 1561 Berto Monard also reports detection of a possible magnitude 15.6 supernova on an unfiltered image of 2003 May 17.108UT at: RA 00h 38m 32.67s DEC -24 20' 33.5" (2000), 1"E and 9"S of the centre of the host galaxy, IC1561. The object was designated SN 2003gi on IAUC 8161. SUPERNOVA 2003gj IN NGC 7017 The LOTOSS team have found a supernova of magnitude 17.7 on a KAIT image of June 30.4UT according to IAUC 8161. The position is: RA 21h 07m 19.18s DEC -25 29' 23.6" (2000). This places the object 14.5"W and 8.9"S of the western component of the twin galaxy NGC 7017. SUPERNOVA 2003gk IN NGC 7460 The LOTOSS team also report a supernova recorded on a KAIT image of 2003 July 1.5 at magnitude 17.1. The position is: RA 23h 01m 42.99s DEC +02 16' 08.7" (2000), 1.6"E and 19.2"N of the centre of NGC 7460 according to IAUC 8162. MARS Don Parker, Coral Gables, Florida, USA has reported on IAUC 8162 that a dust cloud has been noted on July 1 and 2 in the Iapygia- Ionium-Hellas region of Mars centred at long. 294deg W and lat. 25deg S. SUPERNOVA 2003gl IN NGC 7782 Another LOTOSS supernova discovery has been reported on IAUC 8163 as being in the galaxy NGC 7782. First detection was on a Tenagra II image of 2003 July 5.4UT at magnitude 18.3. The position is: RA 23h 53m 53.99s DEC +07 57' 23.7" (2000), 1.9"E and 51.2"S of the galaxy's centre. Guy M Hurst
