There had not been any trace of this object on Armstrong's previous image on July 21 (limiting mag 18.5) or on Palomar Sky Survey red or blue plates. The supernova was confirmed the following night and the precise position has been measured as follows: RA 23h 02m 59.45s, DEC +34 43' 19.6" (2000). The offsets from the centre of the host galaxy UGC 12331 are: 1"E and 18.5"S. The object has subsequently been announced on IAUC 8173 and designated supernova 2003gu.
