The object, of magnitude 18.1, was recorded on unfiltered CCD images obtained with a 0.35-m reflector. The measured position is: RA 02h 31m 42.04s DEC +39 22' 05.5" (2000). Offsets are 22.5"E and 36.6"S of the centre of the host galaxy. The object was noted to be absent from Tom Bole's images of 2003 Jan 15, Feb 5 and Feb 21 where limiting magnitudes of about 19.5 applied. It is not present on Palomar Sky Survey II, red plates (1989.672) and blue plates (1993.801) Tom obtained a confirmatory image on Aug 10.098UT and the object was then designated supernova 2003hc on IAUC 8179. Congratulations to Tom on his 46th supernova discovery. SUPERNOVA 2003hd IN MCG -04-5-10 A further LOTOSS supernova discovery, this time in the galaxy MCG -04-5-10, was also announced on IAUC 8179. The object, of magnitude 17.4, was first recorded on 2003 August 9.5UT at: RA 01h 49m 46.31s DEC -21 54' 37.8" (2000), 11.0"W and 10.2"S of the host galaxy's nucleus. VARIABLE STAR COLUMN Could those contributing variable star reports to 'The Astronomer' please note that the editor of that column, Gary Poyner, will be away on holiday next month, and reports for the September issue only (August observations) should, instead, be e-mailed to Chris Jones who has kindly agreed to deputise.
