The object was first detected on an unfiltered CCD exposure of 2003 Aug 19.866UT with a 0.35-m reflector in the course of the UK Nova/Supernova Patrol. The new object is located at RA 15h 56m 33.80s DEC +41 53'47.5" (2000) which is approximately 8.9"E and 6.1"S of the centre of the host galaxy. The suspect is not present on Tom's images of 2003 Feb 28 (limiting magnitude 19.0) nor on Apr 8 and May 28 (limiting mag 19.5). Further it is not recorded on Palomar Sky Survey red (1991.272) or blue plates (1988.370) A follow-up confirmatory image was obtained on Aug 20.852UT with the object again at magnitude 18.1. Although an IAU Circular has not yet been issued, the object has been designated supernova 2003hi in a preliminary announcement on Central Bureau Electronic Telegram 41. We offer congratulations to Tom on his 47th supernova discovery. Further to the note on TA E-Circular 1907 when we reported the 100th patrol discovery had been made, we can now add that supernova 2003hi is also the 100th supernova detection by observers based in the UK. Sincere congratulations to all who have been involved in the series of successes which started with Mark Armstrong's discovery in 1996. Guy M Hurst
