The new object is located at: RA 01h 55m 24.55s DEC +21 17'06.4" (2000) (equinox 2000.0), which is approximately 2" west and 3.6" south of the centre of UGC 1393. Nothing was visible at this position on Mark's images taken on 2003 Sept. 1, Sept. 18 (LM 19.0) and Sept. 23 (LM 19.5) nor was it detected on Palomar Sky Survey red, blue and infra-red plates. The object was subsequently designated as Supernova 2003iu and announced on IAUC 8226 (delayed in reaching us). Congratulations to Mark on the discovery of his 48th supernova. SUPERNOVA 2003it IN UGC 40 Tim Puckett and L Cox, USA, have reported on IAUC 8225 that they have detected a possible magnitude 17.2 supernova in UGC 40 on an unfiltered CCD image of 2003 Oct 13.13UT. The measured position is: RA 00h 05m 48.47s DEC +27 27' 09.6" (2000), 1.2"E and 11.3"N of the centre of the host galaxy. V844 HERCULIS Gary Poyner, Birmingham, and Eddy Muyllaert, Ostend, Belgium report that V844 Herculis is in outburst: 2003 Oct 23.750, 12.2v (Muyllaert, 0.21-m Schmidt-Cassegrain, AAVSO sequence) 2003 Oct 23.796, 12.5v (Poyner, 0.35-m Schmidt-Cassegrain) Guy M Hurst
