The object appeared on multiple unfiltered CCD images secured for the UK Nova/Supernova Patrol with a 0.35-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, but these related to a single night only centred at May 18.981UT. He derived the following position from astrometry: RA 15h 54m 52.03s DEC +21 07'11.0" (2000), 1.2"W and 10.5"N of the centre of the parent galaxy. Tom added that the suspect was not present on his images of 2004 Jan 29 and Mar 20 (limiting mag 19.5) and it was not found on DSS II red (1992.201) or blue plates (1993.316). In a later e-mail, also received on May 19, Tom relayed that a confirmatory image of the suspect had been obtained on May 19.896UT. The end figures from the second night were RA: 52.04s, DEC 10.7". Although an announcement was made on Electronic Telegram 67 by the Central Bureau on May 20 designating the object as supernova 2004bu, an IAU Circular has not yet been received. Congratulations to Tom on the discovery of his 65th supernova. Jean-Marie Llapasset, France has relayed via VSNET an unfiltered red CCD magnitude for this object obtained by Joel Nicolas, Observatory Vallauris, France. On May 21.873UT, the measurement was 16.1. Hitoshi Yamaoka, Japan reports that the galaxy is an edge-on spiral (Scd:) galaxy. The expected maximum for a typical SN Ia is mag about 16.2. Guy M Hurst
