Pojmanski, Warsaw University Astronomical Observatory, a variable object has been discovered on the 'All Sky Automated Survey' (ASAS) images obtained with a 65-mm-aperture (180-mm-focal-length f/2.8) telephoto lens at Las Campanas on 2003 July 3.14UT (V = 11.98) and 5.23UT (V 11.19). The position is: RA 17h 12m 51.3s DEC -30 56' 39" (2000). Nothing was visible on survey images of June 27.2UT to a limit of V=14.0. H. Yamaoka, Japan obtained the following end figures from an image by G. Bolt, Australia: 51s.28, 37".6. Nogami relays that a spectrum taken by M. Fujii, Japan on July 6.51UT shows prominent Balmer emission lines (FWHM about 500 km/s for H_alpha, with possible P-Cyg profile). Nogami suggests it resembles the slow nova V723 Cas during the pre-maximum halt phase. Additional magnitude estimates: July 4.985, [11.8 (W. Liller, Chile, Technical Pan film + orange filter); 6.234, V = 10.92 (Pojmanski); 6.281, 11.1 (M. Linnolt, Honolulu, HI) SUPERNOVA 2004cz IN ESO 407-G9 C. Jacques and T.
