It is located at RA 17h 29m 18s, DEC -31 46.0' (2000). It was not recorded on earlier exposures: 2004 July 18.637,[11.9; 30.569, [10.8). An ASAS-3 image taken on Aug. 2.071 also shows this new object at V = 9.9. K. Itagaki has obtained a precise position from a CCD image of August 5.475UT: RA 17h 29m 18.81s DEC -31 46' 01.5" (2000). The object may be identical with the location of a very red catalogued star whose USNO-A2.0 position end figures are 18.818s, 01.68" of blue magnitude 19.7, red 17.4. A low-resolution spectrum of the new object, taken by M. Fujii, Japan, on Aug.5.49, suggests that the object is a classical nova. Laszlo Kiss, Sydney, Australia, has reported seeing the object on August 6.465UT at 9.8. He comments that it is very red as seen in an 8-inch Dobsonian. (VSNET). Guy M Hurst
