The object, of magnitude 17.9, was recorded on 10 photographs centred around 2004 September 8.074UT using unfiltered CCD images obtained with a 0.35-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The new object is located at: RA 03h 41m 32.69s DEC +37 13'30.2" (2000), 4.3"E and 2.9"S of the centre of the host galaxy. The suspect is not present on Tom's images of 2004 Jan 9 and Feb 22 (limiting mag 19.5) and it is not recorded on DSS II red (1988.717, limiting mag 21.5) or blue plates (1989.670, limiting mag 21.5). In a further e-mail of September 9, Tom Boles relayed that he had obtained a confirmation image on September 8.998UT. The object has been designated supernova 2004ei and announced on IAUC 8401. Congratulations to Tom on the discovery of his 75th supernova. V587 LYRAE Gary Poyner, Birmingham, England, reports his visual detection of an outburst of V587 Lyrae. He estimated that on Sept 14.974UT the magnitude was 14.3 using a Henden/Sumner sequence. Paul Dubovsky, Podbiel, Slovakia, reports confirmation: Sept 13.967UT, <14.8 Sept 14.912UT, 14.7 Guy M Hurst
