The discovery image was obtained on 2004 Sept 14.870UT and the following position was measured: SN 2004 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset 2004el Sept.14.870 14 59 51.79 +54 37 06.1 16.8 9.9"W, 2.7"S Tom Boles confirmed the presence of the new object on Sept 14.943, magnitude 17.2 and Ron Arbour also confirmed it on Sept 15.822UT at magnitude 16.8. He adds that it was not present on his image of 2004 March 30 (limiting magnitude 19.5). A spectrum was obtained by P. Berlind on Sept 17.12UT with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope revealing that it is of type II. The object was announced and designated supernova 2004el on IAUC 8406 issued on September 23. Congratulations to Ron on the discovery of his 13th supernova. Guy M Hurst
