------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 2050 2004 Oct 22 16.01UT Ed:Guy M Hurst, 16,Westminster Close, Kempshott Rise, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP,England.Telephone/FAX(01256)471074Int:+441256471074 INTERNET: GUY@TAHQ.DEMON.CO.UK GMH at AST.STAR.RL.AC.UK WORLD WIDE WEB http://www.theastronomer.org ------------------------------------------------------------------- EDITORIAL Following the issue of E2049 yesterday Mark Kidger drew our attention to the fact that the circular arrived garbled in his Hotmail mailbox. This circular, E2050, has therefore been delayed whilst tests were carried out. These showed that mail to other Hotmail boxes was also affected in the same way despite the fact the procedure for sending them from here has not changed at all. Feedback from a small sample of non-Hotmail subscribers, however, showed messages arriving perfectly normally and in the same format as previously. If anyone receiving this circular has noticed any change of format or that any parts of the message are garbled please e-mail me. In the meantime we are in touch with the Hotmail support staff so they can investigate if the treatment of incoming mail there has been changed. SUPERNOVA 2004dj IN NGC 2403 Observations received from Reinder Bouma (Netherlands) and J. Llapasset, France (via VSNET) indicate that the rate of decline of supernova 2004dj has suddenly increased substantially. Unfortunately the number of observations is quite low but it appears to have faded from near magnitude 13.2 on October 15 to 14.5 by October 21. Observations to extend the light curve and to monitor this changed activity are urgently required. Up to date charts can be accessed on-line at the AAVSO website by typing in sn 2004dj at the following address and requesting a search: http://www.aavso.org/observing/charts/ Guy M Hurst
