The discovery was made from a series of 10 unfiltered CCD images taken on Nov 14.085UT using a 0.35-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The following position was derived: RA 02h 01m 06.41s DEC +31 52' 44.2" (2000), 2.4"W and 13.0"S of the centre of the host galaxy. The suspect is not present on Tom's images of 2004 Aug 25, Sept. 8 and Oct. 5 (limiting mag 19.5) and it is not present on DSS II red (1991.711 limiting mag 21.0) or blue plates (1993.705 limiting mag 21.5) A further and quite independent e-mail was also received on November 14 and timed at 09.07UT from Ron Arbour of South Wonston, England. He reported the same object which had been recorded on Nov 14.0842UT using a 0.3-m f/6.3 Schmidt-Cassegrain and Starlight Xpress CCD during the course of the same patrol. Ron added that the unfiltered magnitude was 15.9 against a limit for his discovery image of 17.5. A follow-up exposure of Nov 14.744UT showed the magnitude as 16.0. The object was designated supernova 2004fz and announced on IAUC 8437. Congratulations to Tom on the discovery of his 80th supernova and to Ron on his 15th. A report on IAUC 8436 by M. Modjaz et. al., Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics indicates a spectrum was obtained by M. Westover on Nov. 10.17 UT with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope indicating it is a type-Ia supernova, then several days before maximum light. SUPERNOVA 2004fd IN NGC 1060 The discovery of this object by Tom Boles was reported on TA E-Circular 2056. A follow-up report by M. Modjaz and others on IAUC 8437 suggests it to be a type Ia supernova from analysis of a spectrum obtained on Nov 13.33UT. Guy M Hurst
