The object was first noted on an unfiltered CCD image of 2004 Nov 20.872UT (one of a series of 10) obtained with a 0.35-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The new object is located at: RA 21h 57m 52.39s DEC +42 18' 57.8" (2000), which is approximately 26.3"W and 35.6"N of the centre of the host galaxy. The suspect is not present on Tom's images of 2004 Sept. 3 and 14, Oct. 4, (limiting mag 19.5) and it is also not recorded on DSS II red (1989.675 limiting mag 20.5) or blue plates (1989.522 limiting mag 20.0) Confirmation was obtained on an image of Nov. 21.871UT. The object was designated supernova 2004gf and announced on IAUC 8444. Congratulations to Tom on the discovery of his 81st supernova.
