------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 2142 2005 Aug 20 13.29UT Ed:Guy M Hurst, 16,Westminster Close, Kempshott Rise, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP,England.Telephone/FAX(01256)471074Int:+441256471074 INTERNET: GUY@TAHQ.DEMON.CO.UK GMH at AST.STAR.RL.AC.UK WORLD WIDE WEB http://www.theastronomer.org ------------------------------------------------------------------- NSV 601 Sebastian Otero, Argentina, has reported that his examination of ASAS data for NSV 601 suggests it is a hitherto unrecognised dwarf nova. There is an error in the identification from GCVS data but NSV 601 is in the PHL Catalog of faint blue stars at 18.7p. The PHL position agrees with ASAS. The fact that it is a blue star confirms the identification. PHL 3638 is also: USNO A-2.0 0675-00607322 = 01 42 25.249 -22 15 57.16 (B= 18.4) USNO B-1.0 0677-0026724 = 01 42 25.28 -22 15 58.3 (B= 18.8) GSC2.2 S00300011770 = 01 42 25.247 -22 15 56.73 (Bj= 18.48) It is not in the 2005 version of the Downes catalogue. The maximum magnitude in the 15-days long outburst recorded by ASAS (the only one to date in November 2001) is V= 12.2. It is ASAS 014225-2216.0. See the lightcurve here: http://www.astrouw.edu.pl/cgi-asas/asas_lc/014225-2216.0 NSV 601 is 12.2 at maximum (12.2 - <14.4) and it is BV 1187. It is, therefore, a new UG star with an approximate range 12.2 - 18.7. The new object is 15"E and 40"N of the centre of the host galaxy. It is not shown on the ESO 'B@ survey to a limit of magnitude 19. Supernovae 1984J and 1986L also appeared in the same galaxy and were both detected by the present discoverer of SN 2005df. Alan Gilmore, Mount John Observatory, reports confirmation of the new object at R = 13.7 on an image taken with the 0.6-m f/6.4 reflector on Aug. 5.44. The following position was measured: RA 04h 17m 37.85a DEC -62 46' 09.5" (2000). SUPERNOVA 2005dg IN ESO 420-3 Discovery by Berto Monard of a possible supernova (IAUC 8581): SN 2005 UT R.A.
