EDITOR'S ABSENCE
I shall be away from today until late on Sunday (Jan 22) and for most of 
the time not contactable. However I will be giving talks at the BAA 
meeting in Canterbury this Saturday and may see some of you there.

During my absence Nick James has kindly agreed to issue any urgent 
messages and deal with any potential discoveries so please contact him 
using the details in the magazine.

COMET 73P/SCHWASSMANN-WACHMANN
J. A. Farrell, USA, reports on IAUC 8659 that unfiltered CCD
exposures obtained with a 0.41-m f/8.4 reflector show a companion to 
comet 73P moving at the same general direction and rate as the primary; 
separations and position angles from the primary are as follows:  Jan. 
6.48831 UT, 1392".3 +/- 0".6 in p.a.270.28 deg; 7.51252, 1414".4 +/- 
0".8 in p.a. 269.90 deg; 9.39304, 1454".5 +/- 1".8 in p.a. 270.04 deg. 
On the first two nights, the magnitude of the primary was found to be 
16.2-16.4, while the primary was at mag 18.8-19.0.

SUPERNOVA 2006B IN UGC 12538
Discovery by Puckett and Sostero of a possible supernova (IAUC 8657):
