The object was recorded on 10 images centred on 2006 Mar 2.194UT using a 0.35-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and an unfiltered CCD. The position is: RA 17h 30m 41.19s DEC +06 16' 33.1" (2000), which is approximately 11.9" W and 23.0" S of the centre of host galaxy. The suspect is not present on Tom's images of 2005 July 16 and Aug 29 (limiting mag 19.5) nor on DSS II red (1997.281 limiting mag 20.5) or blue plates (1990.461 limiting mag 21.0). In a further e-mail received on March 3, Tom relayed that he had obtained confirmation of the new object on March 3.159UT at a similar magnitude and with end figures for the position of: RA 41.19s DEC 33.2". The object has been designated supernova 2006ap and announced on IAUC 8683. Congratulations to Tom on the discovery of his 97th supernova. Guy M Hurst
