The new object was about 30"W and 50"N of the nucleus. Nothing was recorded on images taken on July 21.9 (limiting mag about 19.0). R. Behrend, Geneva Observatory, reports the following precise position: RA 00h 42m 39.16s DEC +40 52'47.2" (2000). D. C. Leonard et. al., San Diego State University and others report on CBET 593 that a CCD spectrum of this object obtained on Aug.2 UT with the double spectrograph mounted on the Palomar Observatory 5-m Hale telescope, confirms that it is indeed a nova.
