Subsequently S. Blondin, M. Modjaz, R. Kirshner, and P. Challis, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, report on CBET 781 that a spectrum (range 350-740 nm) obtained on Dec. 21.57 UT by M.Calkins with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope shows it to be a type-IIb supernova. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra indicates that 2006ss is similar to SN 1993J at 19 days past explosion; see the following URL for a comparison plot: http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/oir/Research/supernova/spectra/sn2006ss_comp.g if).
