N. Samus, Institute of Astronomy, Russian Academy of Sciences, advises that the object has been designated V1065 Centauri. Bill Liller adds that he has received images taken by two amateur astronomers, Gerardo Addiego and Washington Fonseca in Uruguay at Jan. 21.035UT and Jan.21.042UT. Both clearly show the nova pre-discovery. Bill estimates its V magnitude then to be 7.6 +/- 0.2. Addiego's image is in colour and shows that the nova had an "off-white" colour, certainly bluer than B-V = +1.46, the colour of GSC 8642 768, a star nearby with V = 7.47. B. Heathcote (Australia) reports on IAUC 8800 the following precise position from CCD images obtained on Jan. 25.708: RA 11h 43m 10.33s DEC -58 04' 04.3" (2000), with magnitudes B = 9.08 and V = 8.59. F. M. Walter, Stony Brook University, writes on IAUC 8800 that red and blue spectra, obtained on Jan. 26.3 UT with the SMARTS 1.5-m telescope at Cerro Tololo, shows the new variable to be a classical nova near maximum. COMET C/2006 P1 (McNAUGHT) K. Battams, Interferometrics, Inc., and Naval Research Laboratory, reports on IAUC 8793 that images of comet C/2006 P1 obtained on Jan. 11 with the SECCHI/HI-1B instrument on the NASA STEREO-B (Behind) spacecraft are available at the following website URL: http://ares.nrl.navy.mil/sungrazer/index.php?p=latest_news The images show a curved, striated dust tail some 7 degrees long, the bright coma being heavily saturated due to its brightness.
