IC 1525 also produced the supernova 1998cu. The initial detection was on a single image of 2009 May 24.064UT obtained with a 0.35-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The suspected supernova is located at: RA 23h 59m 14.42s DEC +46 52' 36.9" (2000), which is approximately 14.9" west and 44.3" south of the centre of the host galaxy. Nothing is present at this position on Tom's images of 2007 Dec 13 and 2008 Jul 30 (limiting mag 19.5) nor on the Digitised Sky Survey Plates of 1990 Aug 21 (limiting red mag 20.5), and 1989 Sep 28 (limiting blue mag 21.0). In a follow-up message of May 25, Tom advised that he had succeeded in obtaining multiple confirmation images of this object on May 25.056UT at magnitude 17.7 with end figures: 14.2s and 36.9". The discovery has been announced on Electronic Telegram 1812 issued by the Central Bureau and the object designated SN 2009es. Congratulations to Tom on the discovery of his 120th supernova.
