COMET 29P/SCHWASSMANN-WACHMANN 1
Mark Kidger, Planetary Editor of 'The Astronomer' e-mails:

Faustino García (MPC J38, Valdes, Asturias, Spain) reports the detection 
of an exceptional outburst of Comet 29p/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1. He 
measures in R:

2010 Feb 2, 23h58m10 UT  magnitude 11.70  +/-0.03

in a 10" square aperture. The comet is effectively point-like with a 
very slight extension to the NE and magnitude essentially 
aperture-independent.

The outburst has been confirmed by Josep-Maria Bosch (MPC B74, Santa 
Maria de Montmagastrell, Catalonia, Spain)

2010 Feb 3, 01h32m56s UT magnitude 11.55 +/-0.01

In both cases the reference catalogue is CMC-14. The amplitude of the 
outburst appears to be the second largest observed since 2001, with the 
brightest maxima observed since then being:

2008 Sept 21 11.4
2008 Jan  12 11.7
2002 Aug  05 11.9

SUPERNOVA 2009mz IN NGC 5426
