The object, of magnitude 17.2, was recorded on 20 images obtained on a single night at Mar 4.808UT using a 0.35-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and unfiltered CCD. It is located at: RA 11h 39m 19.3s DEC +89 06' 05.7" (2000) which is on the fringes of NGC 3172 with estimated offsets 111.7 deg W and 31" N. Tom adds that it is only 62.8" away from SN 2004fy found in MCG +15-1-10 which may introduce an uncertainty as to the latest object's host galaxy. The supernova was confirmed on Mar 6.013 at magnitude 17.1 Nothing is present at this position on Tom's images of 2007 Mar 11 and 2009 Jan 11 (limiting mag 19.5) or on Digitised Sky Survey plates from 1998 Jan. 27 (limiting blue mag 21.0) and 1998 Apr. 21 (limiting red mag 20.5). An image is available here: http://www.supernova.myzen.co.uk/images/NGC3172-marked2.tif The object has been designated SN 2010af on CBET 2194. Congratulations to Tom on the discovery of his 129th supernova. SUPERNOVA 2009nn IN SDSS J123355.87+135508.3).
