Larson, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) reports that images of the main-belt minor planet (596) Scheila, taken on 2010 Dec. 11.44-11.47UT with the 0.68-m f/1.8 Schmidt telescope at Catalina, show the object to be in apparent outburst with a comet-like appearance. It showed a total V magnitude of about 13.4 whereas on Oct 18 and Nov 2 it was stellar and about magnitude 14.5. CBET 2583 On Dec 11.4 it had an envelope extending 2' north and 5' west of the central condensation. Images using remote robotic telescopes have been received at TAHQ from Ernesto Guido obtained on Dec 12 at 08h40mUT and by Martin Mobberley (Dec 13.4UT) which both clearly show a comet-like outburst. THE ASTRONOMER, 2010 NOVEMBER ISSUE Though we have heard nothing further from Royal Mail, over 20 UK-based subscribers have reported that their November paper magazines were delivered Dec 10-12 suggesting the misplaced sack has been found. We also have had a few messages from continental European subscribers where delivery has been patchy inferring the second 'foreign mail' sack may have surfaced. Rather than ask everyone to confirm delivery could I please instead ask any subscriber to the paper magazine (rather than PDF) who has still NOT received their copy at the time of this circular to e-mail the Editor. Please also state if you would be happy to accept a pdf copy of the November issue or a replacement paper copy as we have a limited emergency supply.
