The object, of magnitude 17.1 was recorded on unfiltered CCD images taken on 2011 Apr 04.041 with a 0.35-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. It is located at: RA 17h 10m 05.81s DEC +42 22' 20.1" (2000), which is approximately 7.4"E and 2.1"N of the centre of the host galaxy. Nothing is present at this position on Tom's images from 2010 Oct 20 and 2011 Feb 7 (limiting mag 19.5) nor on Digitised Sky Survey Plates from 1992-07-21 (limiting red mag 20.5), and 1989-07-02 (limiting blue mag 21.0). A further e-mail provided details of confirmation on Apr. 5.116UT With measured position end figures 05.83s, 20.3" and magnitude V = 17.1. The variable was designated PSN J17100581+4222201 when posted on the TOCP webpage and is now designated SN 2011bi based on the spectroscopic reports below. G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), reports that a spectrum obtained on Apr. 4 UT by Marion with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST) shows that 2011bi is a type-IIP supernova approximately three weeks after the explosion. J. Chen et. al., report an optical spectrum obtained on Apr. 8.80 UT with the 2.16-m telescope (+ OMR) at the Xinglong Station of the NAOC shows that 2011bi matches that of SN 2004et at 23 days after maximum. Congratulations to Tom on this his 142nd supernova discovery. Guy M Hurst
