The discovery was made using a 0.35-m f/6 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with SXVF H9 camera. The new object, of magnitude 17.6 (unfiltered) was measured to be at: RA 18h39m53.93s DEC +40 01'43.7" 6" west of the host galaxy's nucleus. Nothing is visible at this position on Digitised Sky Survey blue plates of 1989 July 2 and 1993 May 30 (red). The variable was designated PSN J18395393+4001437 when it was posted on the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and now designated SN 2011fy (CBET 2831) based on the spectroscopic report below. Additional unfiltered CCD magnitudes for 2011fy: 2011 Sept. 18.84, 17.6 (Arbour; position end figures 53s.91, 43".7); 18.99, 18:(David Briggs, Portsmouth, England; 60-cm Newtonian reflector; position end figures 53s.93, 45"); 19.22, 17.9 (Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia; position end figures 53s.88, 44".1); 21.87, 18.0 (Arbour; position end figures 53s.93, 44".7; limiting mag 20.4); 23.90, 17.9 (Arbour; position end figures 53s.94, 44".7). S. Valenti et. al., Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica; and Andrea Pastorello, Dipartimento di Astronomia, Universita di Padova, on behalf of a larger collaboration, report that a spectrogram obtained on Sept. 24.81 UT with the Ekar-Copernico 1.82-m telescope (+ AFOSC), shows it to be a young type-IIP supernova, a few days after explosion. The spectrum shows a blue continuum with superimposed prominent P-Cyg H lines, and weak He I 587.6-nm and Fe II features. Congratulations to Ron on the discovery of his 26th supernova. Guy M Hurst
